EV Collision Repair

Accent Collision specializes in EV collision and body repair for Tesla, Polestar, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Audi e-tron, Mercedes EQS, BMW i-series, and every other electric vehicle on the road in Los Angeles. EVs aren’t gas cars with batteries bolted on. The body materials are different, the safety systems are different, the parts supply chains are different, and a shop that doesn’t know the difference will either damage your vehicle further or charge you for work that wasn’t actually needed.

Why EV collision repair is different

Three things make EV body repair fundamentally different from gas vehicle repair:

  • Aluminum bodies, not steel. Tesla Model S, Model X, most of the structure Air, Audi e-tron — these vehicles use aluminum panels and structural components extensively. Aluminum requires dedicated tooling (separate welders, separate sanders, separate prep stations) to avoid galvanic contamination from steel work. Our shop is set up for aluminum with isolated workstations and the SprayBake SB1000 downdraft booth handles the OEM-spec aluminum primer and refinishing process.
  • High-voltage systems. Every EV runs 400V or 800V battery systems with active components running through the floor pan, rocker panels, and rear structure. Before any structural work, the high-voltage system has to be safely isolated by a technician trained on that specific vehicle’s HV procedures. Cutting into an unisolated EV is dangerous to the tech and can total the battery pack. Our techs are trained for HV isolation on Tesla, and the major OEM EV platforms.
  • ADAS sensors everywhere. EVs are loaded with driver-assistance hardware — forward radar, lidar, 360-degree cameras, ultrasonic parking sensors, blind-spot radar. Even a minor bumper hit can knock these out of calibration. After every repair, every affected ADAS system gets recalibrated using OEM-spec targets and procedures, with a post-repair scan to confirm zero stored fault codes before the vehicle leaves the shop.

Our EV-specific capabilities

  • Dedicated aluminum repair area. Isolated workstation with aluminum-only welders, hammers, prep tools to prevent galvanic contamination. Critical for Tesla S/X, and other aluminum-bodied EVs.
  • SprayBake SB1000 downdraft paint booth — 14 × 14 × 24 ft interior, OEM-spec airflow and bake cycles. Handles aluminum primer systems and waterborne EV paint codes from every major OEM.
  • High-voltage system isolation training. Our techs are trained on platform-specific HV disconnect procedures for Tesla, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and the rest. We don’t cut a single panel until HV is verified isolated.
  • Full ADAS recalibration on-site. Forward radar, 360 cameras, lidar, blind-spot, lane-keep, parking sensors. OEM-approved targets and procedures. Post-repair scan to verify zero fault codes.
  • OEM parts standard. EVs are not the place to substitute aftermarket panels — fit, finish, and ADAS sensor housings all depend on OEM tolerances. We source OEM directly unless you specifically opt for aftermarket.
  • Glass roof and structural glass handling. Tesla Model 3/Y/S/X, and several other EVs use structural glass roofs. Replacement requires specific lift and bonding procedures we have the equipment for.

Insurance + EVs

Insurance and EVs is its own challenge. Battery damage is expensive enough that even moderate collisions can push EVs past the total-loss threshold faster than a comparable gas vehicle. We work directly with adjusters from every major carrier (AAA, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, Mercury, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, Progressive, USAA) on EV claims, including HV battery inspection, scan-and-repair documentation, and OEM parts justifications. If your insurance carrier pushes you toward a shop that “does Teslas,” ask them whether that shop has aluminum capability, HV training, and ADAS recalibration on-site. Most general-purpose shops don’t.

Under California Insurance Code §758.5, you have the legal right to choose any licensed body shop. Insurers cannot require you to use their preferred shop, even for EVs.

How an EV repair runs through our shop

  • Estimate — visual + initial OBD scan to capture pre-repair fault codes. We log them for the supplement file in case insurance pushes back.
  • HV isolation — battery service disconnect per OEM procedure. Verified isolated before any disassembly.
  • Disassembly — bumpers, panels, sensors removed. Damage inspection extends to crumple zones, structural members, and battery enclosure if rear/underside impact.
  • Structural and panel work — aluminum welding (where applicable) in the dedicated aluminum bay. Frame measurement on the rack. Replacement panels per OEM spec.
  • Paint and refinish — SprayBake SB1000 booth, OEM aluminum primer system, color-matched waterborne basecoat and clearcoat.
  • Reassembly — new OEM clips, fasteners, sensor brackets.
  • ADAS recalibration — every affected system recalibrated to OEM spec, with calibration documentation.
  • Post-repair scan — full diagnostic scan, every code cleared, no DTCs stored.
  • Quality check + delivery — shop foreman walks the vehicle in natural light for paint match, panel gap, and finish. Lifetime workmanship warranty in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my EV’s warranty be affected by collision repair?

No, if the repair is done correctly. Manufacturer warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship, not collision damage. A repair performed with OEM parts and OEM procedures preserves the warranty. We document every repair to OEM standards so you have a paper trail if any future warranty question comes up.

Do you work on Tesla Cybertrucks?

Yes. The Cybertruck’s exoskeleton stainless steel structure is its own animal — replacement panels rather than traditional body work, and OEM-sourced sail panels and exoskeleton sections. We work directly with Tesla’s parts channel for Cybertruck repairs and have the rigging to handle the vehicle’s weight on our lifts.

My battery was damaged — do I need to replace the whole pack?

Not always. Battery packs are modular on most EVs. If only one module is damaged, that module can be replaced. If the battery management system was disturbed but cells are intact, often it’s a BMS replacement only. We coordinate with the OEM and your insurance to scope this correctly — replacing an entire pack when only one module was damaged is one of the most common ways EV claims get inflated.

How long does an EV repair typically take?

Cosmetic repairs (bumper, dent, paint) on EVs run the same 2–4 business days as gas vehicles. Collision repairs run 2–5 weeks depending on aluminum work, parts availability (Tesla Model 3 parts are usually 5–10 days; less common parts can take 2–3 weeks), and ADAS recalibration time. We give you a realistic timeline at the estimate, not a salesy one.

My EV is leased — does that change anything?

No. OEM parts and OEM-spec repair means lease return inspection passes without issue. We can provide documentation showing the repair meets manufacturer standards.

Are EV repairs more expensive than gas vehicle repairs?

Yes, on average — aluminum work is more labor-intensive than steel, OEM parts cost more, and ADAS recalibration is a separate line item. That said, what makes EV claims expensive is usually scope creep at the wrong shop, not the actual cost of doing the work right. Honest, OEM-spec repair at a shop with EV capability is the most economical path. Inflated claims at a shop that doesn’t know what it’s doing is how EVs become total losses unnecessarily.

Frequently asked questions

Can you safely repair an EV with a damaged battery pack?

Yes. Our technicians are trained for high-voltage system isolation on Tesla and the major OEM EV platforms. We isolate the HV system, photograph the pack condition, and consult the carrier for total-loss thresholds when the pack itself is impacted.

Do you do ADAS recalibration in-house?

Yes. We perform forward radar, camera, and lidar recalibration on-site using OEM-approved targets and procedures. Every EV repair includes pre-repair and post-repair scans, documented in writing.

Are EV repairs more expensive than ICE?

Often yes — aluminum substrates, complex ADAS sensors, and HV system safety protocols add labor hours and parts cost. We write estimates carriers recognize and supplement appropriately when teardown reveals additional damage.

Can you match Tesla factory paint?

Yes. We use a SprayBake SB1000 downdraft booth and Tesla-specification refinishing procedures. Our paint match is verified with a colorimeter against undamaged factory panels.
